If you’ve been in marketing, then you’ve probably been asked, “What is your USP?”
What really is a USP?
USP means Unique Selling Proposition. It is a marketing concept referring to any aspect of a product or service that makes it different from its competition.
USP highlights its unique benefits to prospects and customers.
The market is highly competitive. Some are even saturated.
So how can you make your product and service stand out from the rest of the competition?
It is by creating your USP.
So if you want a solid marketing strategy, you shouldn’t overlook your product’s or service’s USP.
What are the key elements of a USP?
𝗔 𝗨𝗦𝗣 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲. Saying that your restaurant has the “best ribs in town” is vague and can be claimed by any restaurant offering ribs. But you can say “Home-styled ribs made with a secret blend of 10 herbs and spices.”
𝗔 𝗨𝗦𝗣 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲. If it is easy to imitate, then it’s hardly unique or it won’t be unique for long. Remember that the goal of a USP is to make you stand out from the rest of your competition.
𝗔 𝗨𝗦𝗣 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗱. Don’t try to be too fancy and clever with your USP that the message is lost to your target audience. Keep it simple. Keep it understandable. Keep it direct.
